Therapy in English for LGBTQ+ people
You may live in Spain or Latin America but still think and express yourself more naturally in English. And the thing is… we know that some things can only be expressed from the heart in the language in which they were first felt.
That is why, if you express yourself better in English, at Tú Yo Psicólogos LGTBIQ+ you can have therapy in English without having to translate what you are going through as you go. Working with a psychologist who speaks English allows you to focus on what matters from the very first minute, feel at ease, and give your feelings the attention they truly deserve.
We currently support LGBTQIA+ people from more than 50 countries. Our team includes professionals based in different countries, and we offer specialised online therapy in English from an LGBTQ+-affirmative, respectful and non-judgmental approach. An approach in which your identity and orientation are not questioned, but respected.
When does therapy in English make sense?
There isn’t just one reason. There can be several, and they are different for everyone. That said, some are more common:
- You speak English better than Spanish and prefer to express yourself in that language.
- You grew up or lived in an English-speaking country, and English is, in some way, your “emotional language”.
- You live outside Spain, or you are from another country and living here, and you prefer therapy in English because you feel more comfortable that way.
- You are bilingual, but there are some topics you prefer to discuss in English.
- You want an LGBTQ+-affirmative therapist and cannot find one who offers therapy in English in your country.
Why does language matter so much in therapy?
Being able to speak in the language that feels most natural to you removes an extra layer of effort: you do not have to translate your pain, worries or distress. Most importantly, you do not lose nuances along the way.
Emotions, memories and the details that matter are often expressed much more naturally in the language in which they were experienced.
When the therapist in front of you speaks English fluently, the whole session can focus entirely on you, without a language barrier getting in the way.
An international team that works in English
Offering therapy in English is not something we do occasionally; it is part of how we work. We have team members based in different countries and work with LGBTQ+ people from more than 50 countries, in both English and Spanish.
And what does all this mean for you? You can work with a psychologist who speaks English naturally and who also understands the realities of LGBTQ+ people across different cultural contexts.
What can you work on in therapy in English?
You can work on the same things as in any other therapy. What changes is the language, not the content:
- Anxiety, mood, insomnia, panic attacks or emotional exhaustion.
- Identity and orientation: a space to think out loud, whether you have doubts or certainties.
- Coming out and your environment: how to tell people and how to set boundaries without damaging relationships.
- Minority stress: the exhaustion of anticipating rejection, day after day.
- Relationships and couples, including online therapy.
- Sexuality, self-esteem, your relationship with your body and life decisions.
¿Online and in-person therapy in English
You can have therapy in English online, by video call from any country (we take time differences into account when arranging appointments), or in person at our Madrid centre, at 6 Calle de Eguilaz, in the Chamberí neighbourhood, near Bilbao metro station, as well as at other locations around the world.
How do I book an appointment?
Send us a message briefly telling us what you need and where you are contacting us from, and we will get back to you to find a suitable appointment time. You do not need to go into detail in writing: you can talk about that calmly in your session. Online or in person?
You choose.
